Caffeine is a stimulant found in tea, coffee, cola, chocolate and other substances. It improves concentration, increases energy and alertness. In the long run, however, caffeine actually causes fatigue. Caffeinated products also cause a rise in blood pressure, which increases risk of stroke and heart attack. Consuming the substance in sizeable portions can lead to high blood pressure, heart arrhythmia, birth defects, headaches, thyroid disease, miscarriages, infertility, ulcers, heartburn and osteoporosis. There are certain conditions that may become worse with too much caffeine as well. Diabetes, panic attacks, anxiety, depression, and mood swings are some of these factors. For these reasons, experts recommend consuming no more than 250 mg of caffeine per day.*
Consuming too much caffeine also affects our ability to deal with stress. Research has shown that people who drink 4-5 cups of coffee per day have an increase in the levels of stress hormones. "Moderate caffeine consumption makes a person react like he/she is having a very stressful day. If you combine the effects of real stress with the artificial boost in stress hormones that comes from caffeine, then you have compounded the effects considerably." (Professor James Lane, Duke University Medical Center)*
