Eating disorders can affect every aspect of a person’s life, from relationships to family to work productivity. These disorders may not be taken as seriously as they should be. A person with an eating disorder is at risk for serious health problems including possible death. Nearly 24 million Americans and 70 million people worldwide are affected by eating disorders. At least 50,000 people will die as a direct result of an eating disorder. Therefore, it is important to pay close attention to the habits and behaviors of friends, relatives, and coworkers that you suspect may have a problem. Below are some telling signs of the possibility of eating disorders. The symptoms will vary by the disorder. Anorexia, Bulimia, and Binge Eating Disorder are the three disorders recognized and treated by mental health professionals.
Telling Signs of Eating Disorders:
Individual is constantly complaining about being “big,” “fat,” or “huge”
Individual believes he/she would be a better person if/when they were thinner
Individual often goes to restroom right after meals and stays there for an extended period of time
Individual avoids restaurants and eating in front of others
Individual is preoccupied with weight, counting calories and fat, and dieting
